• Generally, I enjoyed this book but it unfortunately contains quite a few annoying errors. For example, you do not treat ‘mono’ with antibiotics (it’s a virus), and the important discovery of penicillin by Fleming involved the bacterial genus Staphylococcus not Streptococcus.
  So yes, it’s a fun book; however, be careful regarding some of the sloppy scientific writing.
• Fantastic read! Richtel compellingly interweaves the science and history of immunology into the lives of four patients, each dealing with different aspects of immune function & dysfunction overreaction, underreaction, recognizing self as enemy, recognizing enemy as self, and much more.
  
  It's an ambitious premise, and he pulls it off magnificently. I had to read the whole thing in one sitting. What makes the book supremely compelling is the vivid story of his childhood friend Jason's cancer treatment. Jason not only granted Richtel access to all of his medical records and doctor visits, but also had the kind of revelatory long talks and walks that only best friends can have. The result is an unusually well-rounded psychological portrait of a patient, along with the intricately winding course of his treatment that reads like a detective story, except real. The tales are poignant, and I found myself crying (and laughing) multiple times.
  
  As someone who's studied immunology twice, as both biologist and medical student, I found the book a useful refresher of immune function, with some updates into the 21st century. If you do not have a background in immunology, however, this is a must-read. Every day, billions of malign agents are trying to kill you, and fail only because your immune system is on guard. How does it recognize and ward off the infinitude of potential pathogens that could invade you and lay you low? How can it tell outsiders from insiders? And how does it put the brakes on itself when it's in full defense mode?
  The inner workings the immune system should make you gasp with wonder at the beauty of how nature could come up with something so insanely intricate and effective. It's literally keeping you alive every moment of every day, so do yourself a favor and read up on your T cells, B cells, dendritic cells, interferons, and cytokines so you can better appreciate this miracle that's protecting your body night and day.

• In An Elegant Defense The Extraordinary New Science of the Immune System A Tale in Four Lives, Richtel explains how medical research has overturned what we think we know about ourselves and our environment The book tells the story of four individuals whose immune systems were the key to their health — or to their illness; their stories are used to explore, in clear terms, the history of the research into the immune system and exactly how we now understand it to work.
  
  An interesting read regarding our understanding of the immune system and how society is effecting it.
• Based upon the title and reviews I expected something comparable to the Emperor of All Maladies, to which it aspired. I should have been more attentive - as the tip off is that the author, unlike Siddhartha Mukherjee, is a NYT writer with no background in medicine. Consequently, the book reads like a poor Hollywood script - lots of social drama, precious little about the immune system - history of what we've learned, how it functions, etc. Nothing close to the research and wealth of engaging material in Emperor of All Maladies.
• Must read for anyone interested in the immune system. Couldn’t put the book down for several days until it was finished.
• I heard an interview with the author on the Savage Nation podcast, interviewed by Dr. Michael Savage. I was so interested in what the author said, that I soon after bought the book on . I am not a big non-fiction book reader, but this book has been very hard to put down. The author is a journalist, and a writer, and passes the history and knowledge that he discovered in such a way that though it is non-fiction, you feel you are reading a story. I have not gotten to the end yet, but already I have learned things, or had things I'd been researching on my own for personal reasons, confirmed or clarified. This is not a medical tome written by a doctor, this is book written by a friend because of a friend. If you have loved ones with autoimmune problems or diseases, buy and read this book, and gain hope.
• I was looking forward to learning about the immune system and I did learn quite a bit. The author presented key concepts and introduced us to numerous scientists who broke new ground getting to these understandings. The book certainly follows the structural path of other biological books I've read lately. That is, he follows the scientists in a roughly chronological path as he presents their discoveries and then relates the progress to treatment of some specific patients.
  
  The reading flowed nicely, I never felt like giving it up or bogged down anywhere. Yet all in all it was somewhat disappointing for me in several aspects. Written by a non-scientist, the actual layout and function of the immune system did not come across in a clear, uncluttered, memorable framework. Come to think of it there was not even any description in even minimal depth of the lymphatic system, which certainly is involved. And the scientists were so numerous and their personal stories minimal enough that it was almost a waste of time trying to humanize them and their work.
  
  His primary exploration of a patient was with his friend Jason, and he did a good job of that. Yet I didn't find myself nearly as enamored of Jason as the author was.
  
  So I'd say it's a good book to read but I won't recommend it highly to my friends.
• Tremendously educational book with lots of science. Written with great stories in a conversational style that makes it easy to follow the technical info.

"What a powerful story! I’ve read all of Carissa’s books but this one definitely stands out amongst them and is now my absolute new favorite of hers. It is so powerful not only due to the fascinating plot but because of an important subject it deals with - domestic abuse and the victim’s attempt to fight back. It was terrifying to read at times because the topic, now finally so widely discussed and not silenced anymore, hits so close to home; reading about Nova and her little daughter Lily I kept thinking about all the articles I’ve read and news I've seen in which an abusive partner killed his wife/girlfriend and/or kidnapped their child. But whereas the news articles and reports often offer a short and dry account of the events, Carissa invites the reader into the very mind of the victim and perpetrator, and she does it so masterfully that I found it chilling to read through certain scenes. What I also enjoyed immensely is the growth and transformation of all three main characters (I won’t give away any spoilers but you’ll understand everything in the end) and the newfound strength that connected them as the case with the missing girl progressed. Brilliantly written, haunting and chilling, “Without a Trace” is a true must read for everyone, not just readers interested in thrillers. Bravo!"

• The beginning of the story seemed so typical of the abusive husband saga (of which there are so many lately) but then it takes a different direction w/Nova's escape. Then it gets weird....her daughter Lily disappears- Nova behaves incoherant, terrified of being outdoors, portrayed as mentally ill. With no sign of Lily we are not sure if she ever existed or a figment of a mentally unstable woman's imagination. Next Nova herself disappears mysteriously and again we are left wondering if her ex husband found & killed her. The story was told from 4 POV. Nova, Ellie, the cop, Clara the mysterious neighbor and Martin, the husband. At first I was drawn into the mystery of Nova....is she psychotic? Imagining things? Then she disappears from the story altogether. The rest of the book is about finding Nova and Lily. The book was easy to read, and the characters well defined but lacking genuine emotion.
  My problem was with the plot. Towards the end pieces of the mystery are revealed and at this point things got very confusing, don't want to reveal too much. In my opinion the last quarter of the book was lacking in believability and kind of ridiculous. So many other options, simpler options could have resolved this messy ending
  It's like the author goes out of her way to create a scenario that A- is confusing, and B- so over the top that it becomes anticlimactic and the ending falls flat.
  So I personally would not reccomend it, looking back it was kind of lame.
• Carissa Ann Lynch knows how to write a story to keep you hanging on until the very end.
  
  I had no clue what was true and what wasn’t. I was doubting everything said by every character.
  
  I love her writing and the little twists she puts in to make you stop and think but never put the book down.
  
  There one minute and gone the next, or was she ever really there? If she was, how was all traces of Lily erased so thoroughly?
• I could not put this down. This book was amazing ! I would recommend it for everyone who loves suspense, it definitely kept me guessing until the end!
• I liked the twists and turns. Was a very easy read.
• This book is a cleverly crafted testiment to Carissa’s talent. I loved the twists and story development. She kept me guessing until the end. Easily a five-star read.
• Other than the use of some, what I consider inappropriate language, I enjoyed reading Without a Trace, that's why I rated it four stars. I loved the way the story was brought together, the unfolding of the mystery. In many ways it was a story, not just of Nova, but of many women, maybe even you. It's time the story was told.

• You can’t really appreciate some books until you get to know the author. The Real Right Returns A Handbook for the True Opposition by Daniel Friberg is one of those books.
  
  When I read the first edition of the book nearly three years ago, after Friberg thoughtfully sent me a review copy, all I really knew about the man was that he was the CEO of Arktos, which I only vaguely knew about through reputation. I’d never even had a conversation with the man until he’d solicited me to write for Arktos’ now-defunct website Right On a few months before that. I gave the book a good review, stating that it was worth reading but lacking in substance.
  
  In that time, I’ve not only become good friends with Friberg, I’ve slept at his apartment, gone winging with him in bars, and even spoken at one of his conferences. I even had him autograph my copy of his book (soon to be a collector’s item due to the boners in the intro). Friberg is a man who is generous and loyal, standing by his friends even when throwing under the bus would benefit him and helping them to succeed to the best of his abilities.
  
  It’s because of this that I can approach the recently-released second edition of The Real Right Returns with a different eye. This version of the book includes a large number of corrections and additions, as well as a new intro by Arktos Editor-in-Chief John Bruce Leonard. While I wouldn’t go so far as to say that it feels like an entirely new book, the changes to The Real Right Returns make it both more substantial and more concise, and thus make it more than worth buying if you missed it the first time around.
  
  While it seems strange to talk about a book’s intro as one of its selling points, Leonard’s intro to the new edition of The Real Right Returns does a good job of easing the reader into the currents of Friberg’s thought. The philosophical underpinnings of many of Arktos’ authors are not well-known among many American or English-speaking readers—I certainly was not aware of them when I read the first edition of Friberg’s book—and Leonard does a stellar job of summing them up.
  
  From there, the layout of the book is similar to the first edition, albeit with many corrections and additions. One of Friberg’s biggest contributions to right-wing discourse is pointing out why the right has consistently failed to keep the left from eating away at society their near-total ignorance of metapolitics, defined as the cultural values and trends that influence politics.
  
  While American readers may not recognize the word “metapolitics”—and to be fair, I thought it was a ridiculous neologism when I first read it, in large part because “meta” has been disastrously misused by many left-wing academics—Friberg’s definition of it mirrors Andrew Breitbart’s contention that “politics is downstream from culture.” Political changes that are happening today are the product of cultural changes that happened years ago.
  
  For example, the sudden fixation on gay rights in the Western world is not sui generis, but came about due to years of deliberate cultural subversion by the left. Millennials, the “gayest generation,” were raised on 1990’s TV shows like Will and Grace and Sex and the City that depicted homosexuals as sassy shopping pals instead of the empty, narcissistic pederasts they actually are. The power that Hollywood has in shaping peoples’ minds is immense—just look at how many young leftists take their inspiration from Harry Potter or Star Wars, for Christ’s sake—and by depicting homosexuality as positive for society, an entire generation was brainwashed into thinking that you’re committing a human rights violation if you don’t bake the cake, you bigot.
  
  Friberg zeroes in on the right’s metapolitical failures as one of the biggest causes of their political failures. Particularly in the U.S., the right abandoned culture to leftist control for the longest time due to their penny-pinching attitudes. Leftists are perfectly willing to throw money at unprofitable causes or leave money on the table in order to advance their goals look at the “rural purge” in American TV back in the 1970’s or the constant deplatforming of figures like Roosh or Alex Jones even when their products make money for Silicon Valley. However, right-wingers refuse to fund culture (or defund the left when they have the ability) because of their childlike belief in the “free market."
  
  The Real Right Returns seeks to resuscitate the right-wing from its post-World War II stupor, to strip it of neocon and libertarian pretensions and return it to the only sustainable basis on which it can function blood and soil. Defense of the community, the family, and the nation against not only external threats, but internal ones. The bomb-bearing Muslim rapefugee is not nearly as dangerous as the gift-bearing gay rights activist, for it is the moral turpitude introduced by the latter that paves the way for the predations of the former.
  
  Friberg’s other major point—insofar as it separates him from the majority of right-wing political authors—is that he addresses the Woman Question. Steadfastly ignored by the braindead Boomers who’ve dominated rightist discourse for the longest time, The Real Right Returns devotes some of its length to issues of feminism and sexual relationships in our Tinderfied era, in the chapter “Brief Advice on Gender Roles."
  
  While not earthshattering, merely acknowledging this issue puts Friberg a notch above his contemporaries.
  
  Revisiting The Real Right Returns nearly three years after I first read it, the book retains a freshness that most political writing lacks. This is in part because the trends that Friberg derides are still tearing our societies apart, though their progress has been slowed by the rise of right-wing populism across Europe and North America. However, Friberg’s dissection of metapolitics gives his book longevity beyond the changing headlines, and John Bruce Leonard’s introduction to the new edition helps make the book’s ideas easier to digest.
  
  The bottom line is that The Real Right Returns is well worth your time, a metapolitical masterpiece that sums up the problems of modern society and even provides some decent practical advice. While I don’t know how valuable the second edition will be to those who’ve already purchased the first one, the changes made definitely improve the quality of Friberg’s prose and ideas.

• Really helpful. Good to learn what is going on when I use Facebook. I have been reading Zucked, the book, but my technical reading speed is slow. Summary will help the process. Also plan to attend a Zucked lecture soon. so I will at least have knowledge of significant concepts. Note that this summary is only about 34 pages. My only criticism is that the print was very light.
